Ulubey Canyons
Located within the boundaries of Ulubey district in Uşak Province, Ulubey Canyon is the second-largest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA. This lesser-known natural wonder comprises a main canyon extending along the Ulubey and Banaz Streams, accompanied by dozens of large side canyons. The Ulubey Stream transforms the entire canyon into a hidden paradise.
Formed due to the unique geological structure in the southern and southwestern parts of Ulubey, the canyon remains closed to tourism due to pollution in the Dokuzsele Stream that runs through it. Once the stream is cleaned, the area is expected to be opened for activities like paragliding and eco-tourism.
Former Mayor of Ulubey Municipality, Hüseyin Buğdaylı, emphasized the canyon's potential for tourism, stating, "Ulubey Canyon holds great importance for Uşak and Ulubey. Its inclusion in Turkish tourism would be highly beneficial. However, to make the canyon a tourist attraction, the Dokuzsele Stream flowing through it must be cleaned. No progress can be made in the region as long as chemical waste from the Uşak Karma-Deri Organized Industrial Zone continues to pollute these streams."
Buğdaylı added that while the municipality does not currently have any projects planned for the canyons, future projects would be developed once water treatment facilities are completed. He stated, "We are confident that the treatment plants will eliminate the pollution in the streams. Once clean water begins flowing through them, the canyon will regain its former beauty. If the streams are cleaned, the Ulubey Canyon will be introduced to Turkish tourism through the necessary initiatives by the municipality. However, addressing the chemical pollution is the first priority."
The fertile lands of the canyon are suitable for growing all kinds of fruits and vegetables. Visitors can access the canyon with a sturdy off-road vehicle via dirt roads or embark on a guided group hike along designated routes. The former mayor has made efforts to protect the area and integrate it into tourism responsibly. Activities such as water sports on the Banaz Stream, rock climbing, and hot air balloon tours along the canyon are envisioned.
Ulubey is located 29 km from Uşak city center, with public transportation available throughout the day. Visitors can stay in Uşak city or set up tents on hilltops overlooking the canyon for a closer experience.
