Eşme Rugs

Carpet weaving is one of the traditional Turkish handicrafts that has been practiced in Anatolia for centuries. Anatolian carpets are typically named after the village or town where they are made or after one of the patterns used in their design. Carpets woven in the Eşme district of Uşak are known as "Eşme Kilims." These kilims are distinguished from other Anatolian kilims by their unique patterns and colors.

Eşme Kilims are characterized by muted, pastel tones achieved using natural dyes. The weft and warp are made entirely of wool. In Eşme and its villages, yarns made from fibers such as wool, cotton, goat hair, and mohair are commonly used in weaving. The most prevalent colors in Eşme Kilims are red, green, blue, black, white, brown, and navy. In these kilims, green symbolizes "aspiration," blue represents "hope," red signifies "passionate love," and purple conveys "grief." Each kilim tells a unique story.

The warps of Eşme Kilims are made from medium-thick wool and cotton. Their edges are adorned with small filler motifs. Common colors include pale gray, green, pastel red, and occasionally black in the borders. Eşme Kilims are highly sought after in Western markets.
